Prophet Salih

Mention 9 times in the Qur'an, Prophet Salih was among the chosen Prophet whose community was destroyed after his ceaseless call to worship a single God and to act righteously. Prophet Salih belongs to the tribe of Thamud, some historians associate his community to the Nabatean's civilization. They lived in between present-day South Jordan and North Saudi Arabia, this analogy is  due to the verse 'you build for yourselves palaces in plains, and carve out homes in the mountains' 7:74. Petra (Jordan) and Mad'ain Salih (mountain in Saoudi Arabia) portray  the carving of caves within mountains and big rocks some have an extraordinary facade that could not be reproduce without sophisticated technology.

His community challenged him to produce a miracle, in which God allowed a she-camel to come out from a rock. 'Indeed there has come to you a clear sign (the miracle of the coming out of a huge she-camel from the midst of a rock) from your Lord. This she-camel of Allah is a sign to you; so you leave her to graze in Allah's earth, and touch her not with harm, lest a painful torment should seize you.' 11:61-68 After performing his miracle, the community divided, from one side believing in Salih's prophecy, other showing arrogance and mocking his says and doings. The condition of the miracle was to allow the she-camel to leave prosperous in the land and to drink as per her needs 'Here is a she-camel: it has a right to drink, and you have a right to drink each on a day. 26:155 The community decided to split the provision per days, they would alternatively drink on one day the water fetch and the second day allow the she-camel to drink her portion.

But some disbelievers could not support the pressure of waiting a day, nor allowing a she-camel to drink her due provision. 'Those who were arrogant said: "Verily, we disbelieve in that which you believe in.' So they killed the she-camel and insolently defied the Commandment of their Lord, and said: "Oh Salih! Bring about your threats if you are indeed one of the Messengers of Allah. " So the earthquake seized them, and they lay dead, prostrate in their homes.  7:73-79. Thus God explained the reason of their mischief and wipe their civilisation away leaving behind only parts of their skilful handcraft As if they had never lived there. No doubt! Verily, Thamud disbelieved in their Lord. So away with Thamud! 11: 61-68.

The dwelling place of Salih and his followers differs from narrations. Some believed they settle in Makka, other believed they went to Iraq near Najaf where a place commemorates Prophet Salih's grave, some believe that the survivors went to Palestine as the land was fertile to them. The majority agree that they went to Hadramawt a city in present-day Yemen. A tomb of Prophet's Salih can also be found in the Sinai Peninsula. The presumable rock in which the she-camel came out from is kept in display in Salalah, present-day Oman.
